Pondering America

America's mythology lies among its spaces. Sometimes it's the open sagebrush of the Great Basin of the west. Other times it's the lush and forested Shenandoah Valley, part of the great inland valley that stretches from Canada to Georgia.

Our shared heritage is of individual achievement and expansion across the land. From the founding of the colonies, through the industrial revolution and the great magnates of wealth, Americans celebrate that individual achievement. America also tends to ignore the sting of death, theft and hatred of "others" that helped make that wealth and progress possible.

The myth of the individual in an open land is powerful.

What powered that myh, however, was also the dedication to seek justice. To form a nation where the people decide what constitutes fairness and justice, and protects people from individuals who seek to impose their rule upon others.

It's obvious that things often go two steps forward, then a step back, in a progression of adjustments to maintain peace and order in society. All steps forward can result in unintended consequences, as can all steps backward. This push-pull was understood centuries ago when the Chinese described Yin and Yang; the understanding that opposing forces in nature are also complementary, interconnected and interdependent.

In America today the forces that have consolidated power believe that society has gone too far. Power today believes that we must "return" to that which was lost. So what is it that government has caused to have been lost?

I guess one thing might be today's Supreme Court ruling castrating North Carolina for their racist gerrymandering of Congressional districts. Conservatives certainly oppose that ruling, which basically tells them they have to act honestly and above board. Horrors!

Devon Energy Center in Oklahoma City
Then there's rules trying to clean up the environment. Outraged are the Republicans that there are rules to prevent them from the release of hazardous chemicals. So, now that Scott Pruitt has taken over the EPA, Devon Energy changed its plans to install systems to stop emissions of hazardous chemicals, like benzene a known carcinogen, from their operations. It seems they  figure they can just pay a $25,000 one time fine and just continue to pollute because the "new" EPA is having their enforcement funding slashed to the bone, and ole' Scott doesn't mind one bit if it "frees" the hands of business. I wonder what it costs Devon to have their windows cleaned on their tower?

Oh, yeah, don't forget climate change is a liberal hoax, made by the Chinese according to Trump,

Then there's the Trump budget to be released tomorrow cutting $1.7 trillion dollars over 10 years. The big changes: Gut Medicaid for the poor, throwing 10 million off health insurance, plus chopping off the Children's Health Insurance Program and Social Security Disability Insurance, along with slashing SNAP (Food Stamps).

The WaPo als reports that School Lunch Subsidies, Council on Homelessness and Habitat for Humanity are on the chopping block.

How else can you fund the tax cuts for those millionaires?

So what will America be like when the sick and poor are dead broke. I guess they just move into the plain DEAD category.

It's all about Making America Great Again. You know, like before the Civil War.

You Have to Hand it to Putin.

Vladimir Putin is having a hall of fame year. No one else was able to take a bunch of Red Bull fueled hackers and nudge the world into panic. The French shut him down there last Sunday, but the dividends he's receiving from the United States will fill his coffers for decades to come. Putin not only controls Russia, and keeps the former Soviet client states on a short leash, he now effectively controls Syria with the bonus that no one else in their right mind wants to have anything to do there. The US is now in full crisis mode after the Comey firing.  You can be sure that Comey will be back testifying before Congress. The message today from the Republicans is "Hey, it's no big deal. Nobody liked Comey. You should thank us. It's all about the election. Just because you won doesn't change the fact you lost." I can see in my mind Vlad having a cigar and a good laugh with his senior minions. All this turmoil and it cost them less than a single new tank...

The Friendship Blog

I've been blog AWOL for over a week and it's mostly Brad Herran's fault for coming to visit. Sure I asked him, and he came, so I guess it's really my fault. When two friends are at fault together, it becomes a good. Brad and I were roommates in college and best friends. The first year, 1972-73, we were in adjoining rooms in Bury Hall . I shared a room with Jim "The Missing" Link and Brad sharing with Greg "The Horniest Preacher on Earth" Givili. I was a junior and he was a freshman, and I did exactly what I was supposed to do: I corrupted him from his mid-west sensibilities into a full blown reprobate. The next year we shared "The Dungeon." The Dungeon was the last room on a dead-end hall with no escape except by the central stairwell. We adorned the room appropriately. Bunk beds broken down to make two singles. Window glass painted with blue tempera paint, casting a black-light like glow across the room, and making it hard for C...

About Being an Oregonian

Gasoline sets Oregonians apart from most all other Americans. The reason is simple: This woman is a wanton lawbreaker. For those of you that don't know, pumping your own gas in Oregon isn't generally allowed. There are exceptions, of course, but every year someone moves to Oregon and starts bellyaching about how awful it is that you can't pump your own gas. Today in a guest opinion piece in The Oregonian Murr Brewster explains this and the soul of Oregonians, better than I can. Enjoy! BY MURR BREWSTER Guest columnist Brian K. Pinaire (" Just let us pump our own gas, already ," July 16) would really like to fill his own gas tank. Somehow, this feels like freedom to him. Perhaps I have a few more seconds than he to spend in quiet contemplation while I listen to my car radio, but I have a different take. People think this is a matter of choice, and that the choice to pump one's own gas has been taken off the table. Actually, everywhere self-service h...
