Where to start?

So, let's go to the other end of politics, government regulation.

Volkswagen has been hit with major fines  for deliberately circumventing emissions testing on their diesel engines. That also constitutes a direct lie to all their customers in order to deceive them into buying their product.

Today they added GM to the mix on their Duramax diesel trucks for doing the same. The list also now includes Peugeot, Fiat/Chrysler, Renault, and Mercedes Benz parent compny Daimler.

It appears they all cheated. They all cheated in much the same way, So, how does that happen when they are all supposedly independent companies?

They all will pay massive fines. They also will probably continue in business into the future. No one goes to jail. Will they cheat again?

The time has come to understand that the vast majority of economic crimes result in jail time. Theft, and embezzlement results in individuals being sent to jail. Fraud results in people being sent to jail.

Massive systemic corporate fraud against regulations and consumers results in fines, and bad press.

CEO's, COO's, CFO's and Boards of Directors should all be required to serve jail time. Their reputations should be ruined and they should pay their own court costs. The companies then should be sold off to the highest bidders. And yes, stockholders should lose their investments too.

Do that one or twice and see worldwide business clean up their acts.

But it won't happen. And this second story will explain why, in it's own way.

Donald Trump Jr., "Man Slammer" Greg Gianforte, and Sen Steve Daines of MT.

Greg Gianforte, candidate for US Congress in Montana, body slammed and beat up a reporter last night before today's special election. Gianforte ran as a Trump clone. His actions are just like a Trump rally; beat 'em up.

NBC News reports that Gianforte's campaign says it  has raised "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in contributions since he punched out a reporter last night.

As of now we don't know what will happen when tonight's vote count is released, but word is half or more of Montanans have already voted. Don't doubt, however, that Gianforte the software millionaire is exactly the kind of Republican who will expend every ounce of his energy to protect corrupt business, at the expense of consumers.

Republican voters in Montana are saying the same thing Republican voters said all across the country last November: We want a business leader to run government. As if all business leaders are inherently more capable and trustworthy than other workers or professionals.

Reasonable people know that corruption and evil infects all groups everywhere. No group is exempt. No group is superior. It all comes down to the individuals involved.

Trump was in many ways incredibly transparent. His lies were profuse, to the point of nausea, His record of six bankruptcies clear and documented. His sexual assault was verified by his own lips.  His flip-flop promises on every issue undeniable. And his obstruction of justice is there for all to see. And over 43 million people voted for him.

We will soon know about the people of Montana and Gianforte too. And we will see more and more Trump clones running next year.

You Have to Hand it to Putin.

Vladimir Putin is having a hall of fame year. No one else was able to take a bunch of Red Bull fueled hackers and nudge the world into panic. The French shut him down there last Sunday, but the dividends he's receiving from the United States will fill his coffers for decades to come. Putin not only controls Russia, and keeps the former Soviet client states on a short leash, he now effectively controls Syria with the bonus that no one else in their right mind wants to have anything to do there. The US is now in full crisis mode after the Comey firing.  You can be sure that Comey will be back testifying before Congress. The message today from the Republicans is "Hey, it's no big deal. Nobody liked Comey. You should thank us. It's all about the election. Just because you won doesn't change the fact you lost." I can see in my mind Vlad having a cigar and a good laugh with his senior minions. All this turmoil and it cost them less than a single new tank...

The Friendship Blog

I've been blog AWOL for over a week and it's mostly Brad Herran's fault for coming to visit. Sure I asked him, and he came, so I guess it's really my fault. When two friends are at fault together, it becomes a good. Brad and I were roommates in college and best friends. The first year, 1972-73, we were in adjoining rooms in Bury Hall . I shared a room with Jim "The Missing" Link and Brad sharing with Greg "The Horniest Preacher on Earth" Givili. I was a junior and he was a freshman, and I did exactly what I was supposed to do: I corrupted him from his mid-west sensibilities into a full blown reprobate. The next year we shared "The Dungeon." The Dungeon was the last room on a dead-end hall with no escape except by the central stairwell. We adorned the room appropriately. Bunk beds broken down to make two singles. Window glass painted with blue tempera paint, casting a black-light like glow across the room, and making it hard for C...

About Being an Oregonian

Gasoline sets Oregonians apart from most all other Americans. The reason is simple: This woman is a wanton lawbreaker. For those of you that don't know, pumping your own gas in Oregon isn't generally allowed. There are exceptions, of course, but every year someone moves to Oregon and starts bellyaching about how awful it is that you can't pump your own gas. Today in a guest opinion piece in The Oregonian Murr Brewster explains this and the soul of Oregonians, better than I can. Enjoy! BY MURR BREWSTER Guest columnist Brian K. Pinaire (" Just let us pump our own gas, already ," July 16) would really like to fill his own gas tank. Somehow, this feels like freedom to him. Perhaps I have a few more seconds than he to spend in quiet contemplation while I listen to my car radio, but I have a different take. People think this is a matter of choice, and that the choice to pump one's own gas has been taken off the table. Actually, everywhere self-service h...
